Personal Statement

\nBorn and raised in Singapore, I attended the prestigious Fairfield Methodist School for my primary and secondary education and achieved 5 A's for GCE O'levels. I went on to junior college to do a year of A levels at Anglo-Chinese Junior College in Singapore. I made an informed choice by selecting related subjects such as Higher 2 Mathematics and Economics as it will give me a good foundation when I pursue a degree course in Accounting and Finance. I then made a bold decision to move to the United Kingdom to pursue my further education at Bellerbys College Brighton. Appropriately, I embarked on the Foundation in Business, Finance and Management programme as I have always wanted to study Accounting and Finance related subjects to prepare me for University of Leeds and to pursue a career in the Banking and Finance sector. The logical approach to Mathematics has always intrigued me. While the ever changing world of business presents endless career opportunities. Combining the two is an ideal match for my academic character. As I have always derived deep sense of satisfaction when solving challenging mathematical questions. Being able to begin a new chapter of my life and be given the opportunity to study in the UK allowed me to take on new challenges I never knew I could, had I remained and continued my education in Singapore. Apart from the vigor of experiencing different cultures, living independently, making new friends and learning about life in the UK and about myself, I believe a UK University education will endow graduates with greater confidence and global perspective. It signals to employers one's competitive edge in terms of adaptability and readiness to take on new challenges and responsibilities. I, an eager and active participant in various sporting activities and uniformed groups such as Cross Country, Squash, Badminton. My dedication to The Girl's Brigade helped the unit clinched the company Gold Award in 2009 for three consecutive years. I took part in National Day Parade in 2010 and The National Drill competition in 2011 and achieved the Bronze Award. Through the many contributions and invaluable experience I had garnered, I was promoted to the rank of staff sergeant in 2012 and held the position of head of The Girl's Brigade. I am a keen athlete and regularly participated in sporting events such as inter-class games and the Annual School Cross Country Championship and clinched the top positions for four consecutive years. I have done various acts of service to the community which include assistance in teaching English to school children in Nepal and painting their school, raising funds for the Ayer Rajah bursary Awards in 2011 and participating in a student-initiated beach cleaning project in 2012. I took up the role of Vice-Captain in Cross Country for 4 years as I was extremely passionate about running since young and led my team to Gold for 3 consecutive years. It was my honour to lead my team during one of the most trying moments of our competition as everyone was exhausted and afraid to compete due to injuries incurred during training. as an exemplary leader, I managed to cheer my team on to persevere and eventually completed the race. I believe these are hallmark attributes. Apart from my strong interest in Mathematics and reading Economics, the experience gained had taught me the importance of teamwork, sharpened my time management and analytical skills and help shaped my passion in pursuing a career in the Banking and Finance industry which is stimulating, rewarding, varied and leadership-oriented. Stephen R Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People states: Begin (Bellerbys College) with the end (Accounting and Finance degree) in mind. Given my strength and aspirations, I assure if given the opportunity to pursue working in your company I can take pride in. I shall be committed and perform to the best of my ability.\n
